Our Community
Johnston County is one of the fastest growing counties in North
Carolina. As a whole, the county is made up of numerous
quaint communities, many of which have grown into mini-
cities. Smithfield is the county seat and is where the primary
courthouse is located. Some District Court matters are also
held on Fridays in Benson in the old schoolhouse. Until May
2006, District Court was also held on Wednesdays in a quaint
old building in Selma.
Although subdivisions are replacing tobacco fields in parts of
the county, our agricultural roots are still alive and growing. On
any given day, you can learn all about our county by walking
into D.R. Wells Cleveland Emporium in the Cleveland
Community or into Dunn's Gas & Grocery in Four Oaks where
you'll find plenty of friendly locals and farmers talking it up. To
get a sense of our growing business and industry, take a short
drive down Highway 70 from Clayton through Smithfield or
check out any of our area Chambers of Commerce.
Johnston County is full of a rich history and yet alive with new
plans for the future. Visit any of the community links for an
idea about why so many people are wanting to call Johnston
